2/17/2018 0 Comments Neurological DisordersThe nervous system can have disorders, which lead to a series of symptoms and issues. One disorder is ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. ALS is the most common motor neuron disease among adults. This disorder causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells that control muscle movements, and weakens muscles until they are paralyzed. ALS mostly appears without family history of the condition. Another Nervous System issue is a stroke. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. It is the fourth leading cause of death and leading cause of disability in the U.S.. Symptoms of a stroke include sudden paralysis of leg, arm, or one side of the face, hard time speaking or understanding speech, vision problems, and loss of coordination. Multiple Sclerosis or MS is also a disorder of the nervous system. MS is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. It is caused by damaging or destroying the myelin sheath and causing lesions/ scars to nerve fibers. Symptoms of MS depend on which nerve fibers are damaged. Epilepsy is another disorder of the nervous system. Epilepsy causes recurrent seizures, and can have many possible causes. Some of the causes of epilepsy include imbalance of neurotransmitters, or abnormal nerve connections that form after an injury such as head trauma, or stoke.

2/17/2018 0 Comments Parts and Functions of the NeuronNeurons are cells that make up a nerve. They send and receive electrical signals and neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that communicate information through out the body, and can affect your mood, sleep, concentration, and weight. The neuron is made up of the axon (which is covered in a fatty myelin sheath), dendrites, cell body, and the Synapse (or the gap). There are three types of neurons. Sensory neurons send messages from the body to the brain. Interneurons are located in the brain and spinal cord, and process information. Lastly, motor neurons send messages from the brain to the body.
2/12/2018 0 Comments Parts and functions of the brainThe brain's main function is to receive, organize, and distribute information. The brain has four parts: The Cerebellum, the Cerebrum, the Medulla Oblongata (Brain Stem), and the Spinal Cord. The Cerebrum controls voluntary activities, learning, and judgment. The Cerebellum coordinates and balances muscle action. The Medulla Oblongata (or Brain Stem) Controls involuntary actions such as blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. The Spinal Cord links the brain to the rest of the body, and controls reflexes. (The spinal cord is lower/out of the diagram) |
